Heat Pump Systems: What Are They & How Do They Work?

Heat pump systems are energy-efficient devices used for heating and cooling buildings. They work by extracting heat from the outside air, ground, or water source and transferring it indoors. Heat pumps can reverse this process and cool your home as well, removing heat from indoors and releasing it outside.

A heat pump system generally consists of an indoor and outdoor unit, a compressor, refrigerant lines, and a reversing valve. The heating process involves using these components in the following ways:

  • The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, ground, or water, depending on the type of pump you have.
  • The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant to increase its temperature.
  • The hot refrigerant releases heat into the destination space.
  • The refrigerant then expands, cooling down and repeating the cycle.

Common types of heat pumps include:

  • Air-source
  • Ground-source (geothermal)
  • Water-source heat pumps

Why Invest in Having a Hybrid Home?

Installing an electric heat pump alongside an existing oil-fired heating system can create a hybrid home heating setup. The electric heat pump acts as the primary HVAC source for the home, providing year-round climate control, and the existing HVAC system is retained but used only as a backup. The backup system kicks in when:

  • Outside temperatures are too low for the heat pump to operate efficiently.
  • There's an issue with the electric supply or the heat pump itself.
  • Additional heat is needed to supplement the heat pump in extreme cold.

Most hybrid systems include controls that automatically switch between the heat pump and oil furnace based on efficiency and outdoor temperature. This ensures the most cost-effective and comfortable heating at all times.
